What is the construction and purpose of air filters?

Air filters are intake system components mounted before the engine, designed to clean the intake air. A typical filter consists of filter media, a frame or body, and a seal ensuring a tight fit in the housing. Depending on the vehicle design, it may be panel, cartridge, or cylindrical in form. Its purpose is to protect the engine and intake accessories from dust and contaminants.

What are air filters used for?

Air filters are used to trap contaminants present in the air supplied to the engine. By doing so, they support proper mixture combustion, stable airflow meter operation, and correct fuel metering. They also limit the risk of particles reaching the throttle, intake manifold, and combustion chamber. Their condition has a direct impact on engine performance and driving economy.

What is the construction and function of the air filter housing?

The air filter housing is an intake system component where the filter cartridge is seated. It serves to guide the airflow through the filter and separate the clean air path from the dirty one. In addition to its load-bearing function, it is responsible for the tightness of connections with intake pipes and the correct positioning of the seal. In many cars, it also works with sensors, covers, clips, and intake channels.

How to choose air filters for a specific car version?

When selecting, it is best to compare the OEM part number, fuel type, engine version, and vehicle placement. It is also worth checking the cartridge shape, mounting method in the housing, and any replacement numbers. In the case of changes between pre-facelift and facelift models or differences in equipment, matching by VIN is helpful.

What symptoms indicate worn or dirty air filters?

The most common symptoms are power loss, poor throttle response, increased fuel consumption, and rough engine operation. Increased exhaust emissions and higher engine sensitivity to load may also occur. If the filter is poorly seated or the housing is leaky, problems can also be caused by the intake of unfiltered air.

How to properly install an air filter after replacement?

After opening the housing, remove the old cartridge, clean the interior, and check for leaves, dust, or seal damage on the edges. The new filter must be seated evenly, without folding the frame and without leaving gaps at the edges. Finally, check that the cover, clips, or screws are closed and inspect the condition of the intake pipes.
