What is the construction and purpose of protective and decorative mouldings?

Protective and decorative mouldings are external body finishing elements mounted on doors, sills, bumpers, or other body parts. They serve to shield the paint from abrasions and to improve the vehicle's appearance by highlighting the body lines. A typical element consists of a decorative profile, a support part, and mounting points or an adhesive layer. Depending on the car version, they differ in material, color, shape, and mounting method.

What are protective and decorative mouldings used for?

Protective and decorative mouldings are used to secure body surfaces in areas exposed to daily operational damage. They limit the effects of minor door impacts, parking scrapes, and contact with dirt. In addition to the protective function, they also influence the visual perception of the car and the proper finishing of body panels. A well-chosen moulding also helps maintain stylistic consistency with other body elements.

What role does the moulding mounting play?

Moulding mounting is a set of elements keeping the moulding in the correct position on the body. This usually means clips, slides, fasteners, mounting holes, or double-sided tape matched to a specific profile. Proper mounting is responsible for the even adhesion of the moulding to the sheet metal, the absence of play, and proper fit with adjacent panels. Its condition affects not only the durability of the mounting but also the aesthetics of the entire side or front of the car.

How to choose a protective and decorative moulding for a specific car?

It is best to compare the OEM part number, interchangeable numbers, placement on the vehicle, and mounting side. It is also worth checking the body version, color, and type of surface, because the same model line may have several moulding variants. When purchasing, it is good to look at photos of the mounting points and the edges of the element.

What symptoms indicate that a moulding requires replacement?

The most common symptoms are cracks, deformations, falling off corners, loosened clips, or visible discoloration. Replacement should also be considered when the moulding protrudes from the body and disrupts the fit with the door, sill, or bumper. A damaged element may stop protecting the paint in the place of daily contact.

How to take care of protective and decorative mouldings after installation?

For care, it is best to use mild cleaning agents intended for paint, plastics, or chrome elements, depending on the moulding material. You need to regularly remove salt, mud, and deposits, and at the same time check if there is any play in the mountings. In the case of metal elements, it is worth additionally taking care of protection against corrosion.
