What is the construction and purpose of ignition and glow plug systems?

Ignition and glow plug systems are sets of components responsible for initiating the combustion process in the engine. In petrol versions, they usually include plugs, coils, leads, or control modules, and in diesels, glow plugs, power leads, and control elements. Their parts are mounted in the engine bay, mainly at the cylinder head and engine unit equipment.

What are ignition and glow plug systems used for?

Ignition and glow plug systems are used to ensure proper starting and stable engine operation in various conditions. The ignition system initiates a spark in a petrol engine, and the glow plug system preheats the combustion chamber in a diesel before starting and sometimes after starting as well. Their efficiency affects the smoothness of operation, exhaust emissions, and the ease of starting the unit.

What is the construction and function of an ignition module?

An ignition module is an electronic element controlling the transmission of a pulse to the coil or other ignition system parts. It acts as an intermediary between the control signal and the creation of a spark, which is why it must be compatible with the installation and engine type. When selecting, it is worth checking the OEM number, plug type, and how it works with engine sensors.

How to select a part for a specific engine version?

It is safest to compare the OEM number, engine unit code, connector type, and mounting location. In many cars, the same model generation could have been equipped with different coils, plugs, or modules, which is why it is also worth checking the VIN and equipment version.

What symptoms may indicate a problem with the ignition or glow plug system?

Typical symptoms include starting difficulties, uneven engine operation, misfiring, power loss, or longer cranking of the starter during a cold start. In practice, it is also worth assessing the condition of leads, connectors, plugs, and any signs of overheating at the connectors.

What mounting elements should be paid attention to before purchase?

It is worth checking the number of pins, plug type, mounting layout, and lead length if the element has them. Covers, seals, position in the engine bay, and compatibility with pre-facelift or post-facelift versions are also important if the manufacturer used different equipment variants.
