What is the construction and purpose of tappet and valve covers?

Tappet and valve covers are components that close the upper part of the engine in the area where valves and tappets operate. A typical part consists of a body, gasket seats, mounting holes, and breather connectors or channels depending on the version. Their purpose is to protect timing mechanisms, maintain tightness, and separate oil from external contaminants.

What are tappet and valve covers used for?

Tappet and valve covers are used to protect the moving elements of the timing system from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. They also maintain proper oil circulation in the upper part of the engine and limit leaks. Additionally, they influence noise dampening and the proper operation of the crankcase ventilation system.

What role does the oil separator play in the valve cover system?

The oil separator is a component of the ventilation system that separates oil particles from gases circulating inside the engine. Its role is to limit oil suction into the intake and stabilize the operation of the crankcase ventilation. In many designs, it is integrated with the cover or works directly with breather hoses and seals.

How to choose tappet and valve covers for a specific car version?

It is best to compare the OEM part number, interchangeable numbers, fuel type, and engine version. It is also worth checking the placement on the vehicle, the shape of the connectors, mounting points, and the presence of additional connections. For some models, the difference between pre-facelift and post-facelift versions also matters.

What symptoms indicate wear or a leak in the cover?

The most common symptoms are oil traces around the cover, dirt in the engine bay, and a noticeable smell of oil after the unit warms up. There may also be louder operation of the upper part of the engine or problems with ventilation. In such a situation, you should check the cover itself, the gasket, and the cooperating hoses.

What should be paid attention to when installing a used tappet and valve cover?

Before installation, you need to assess the condition of the mating surfaces, threads, mounting holes, and hose connectors. It is also important to use the appropriate gasket and tighten evenly according to the manufacturer's requirements. After installation, it is worth checking for leaks and ensuring that the part works correctly with the breather system.
