What is the construction and purpose of steering wheels and horn buttons?

Steering wheels and horn buttons are elements mounted on the steering column in the driver's zone. A typical steering wheel consists of a rim, spokes, a central part, a spline mount, and spaces for additional modules, while the horn button is the part that activates the sound signal. This assembly is responsible for both steering the vehicle and operating selected onboard functions.

What are steering wheels and horn buttons used for?

Steering wheels and horn buttons are used for steering the vehicle and for quickly transmitting a warning signal to other road users. The steering wheel transfers the driver's movement to the steering system, and the horn button activates the electrical circuit of the sound signal. In advanced versions, this assembly also operates the radio, phone, cruise control, or paddle shifters.

What is the construction and function of the clock spring under the steering wheel?

The clock spring is an electrical element placed between the steering wheel and the column that maintains the wire connection while the rim is being turned. It is used to transmit signals to the airbag, horn, and multifunction buttons. Its compatibility is important for the number of pins, rotation range, and operation of additional equipment.

How to choose a steering wheel for a specific car version?

It is safest to compare the OEM number, interchangeable numbers, mounting shape, and car equipment version. It is worth checking compatibility with the airbag, the presence of buttons, paddles, and the body version or pre-facelift/facelift year. Color and material also matter if you care about a cohesive interior look.

What symptoms indicate a problem with the horn button or steering wheel installation?

Typical symptoms include no reaction when pressed, intermittent signal operation, non-working multifunction buttons, or an airbag error after steering wheel removal. The cause may be a worn contact, a damaged clock spring, broken wiring, or an incompatible module. Before replacing, it is also worth checking the fuse and electrical connections.

What should be paid attention to when installing a steering wheel or horn button?

During installation, you should disconnect the battery, set the wheels straight, and be careful when working in the airbag zone. You must compare mounting points, connector type, and the position of the clock spring so as not to damage the installation during a turn. After installation, it is worth checking the operation of the horn, buttons, and any additional functions.
