What is the construction and purpose of tow bars and parts?

Tow bars and parts are a set of components mounted to the rear of the vehicle, most often to reinforced structural points of the body or chassis. A typical system consists of a tow bar beam, ball holder, mounting elements, an electrical socket, and, depending on the version, a module and wiring harness. Their purpose is to safely connect the car to a trailer, platform, or other transport equipment.

What are tow bars and parts used for?

Tow bars and parts are used to transfer loads related to towing and to operate the trailer's electrical installation. Thanks to them, it is possible to use trailer lights, ball-mounted racks, and additional transport systems. A correctly selected set also affects the security of the attachment and compatibility with the car's electrical equipment.

What is the construction and function of a tow bar module?

A tow bar module is an electrical controller responsible for transmitting signals from the car to the trailer's installation. It works with the wiring harness, socket, and body electronics, and in some cars, also with parking sensors and lighting control systems. Its function is to protect circuits and ensure the proper operation of trailer lights without overloading the factory installation.

How to choose a tow bar for a specific car version?

It is best to compare the OEM number, body version, production year in terms of pre-facelift or post-facelift, and the method of mounting to the chassis. It is also worth checking if the car requires a specific module, a bumper cutout, or a cover adapted to a detachable or fixed tow bar.

What symptoms indicate wear or damage to tow bar elements?

Typical symptoms include corrosion on the working surface, play in connections, problems with the locking of a detachable element, and incorrect operation of trailer lights. In practice, it is also worth paying attention to a damaged socket, cracked covers, and signs of interference with mounting points.

How to take care of the tow bar electrical installation and trailer socket?

The installation should be protected against moisture, dirt, and oxidation of contacts, especially after intensive use or driving in difficult conditions. A good habit is to periodically check wires, seals, and the operation of all trailer lights before setting off.
